Imagine you’re a patriotic woman committed to serving your country, a mother of small children, and single. Now imagine you’re deployed to a foreign country for 12 months. The Pentagon reports that more than 155,000 women have served in Iraq and Afghanistan. Among their ranks are more than 30,000 single mothers, a number that military experts say is unprecedented. According to the U.S. Defense Department, there are more than 70,500 single parents on active duty in the U.S. military—about 5% of all service members. Operation G.I. Jane is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting deployed, single mothers in the U.S. military by providing five compassionate services: Operation G.I. Jane is not a government agency; it relies on donations of time, expertise and money to complete its mission. Operation G.I. Jane is headquartered in Atlanta, Jula Jane is President and CEO, and Keith Coggins is Executive Vice President.
